Spring Fire Safety Tips

Spring is when people begin opening up their houses, clearing the yard and gearing up for barbecues & campfires.  An important part of the preparation is gearing up for fire safety.  Even though seasons change, being prepared for a fire does not.
Grilling
  1. Make sure the grill is clean. Failure to clean the grill before and after use is a contributing factor in nearly 20% of all grill structure fires.
  2. Make sure the grill is set up in an open, outdoor area with nothing flammable nearby (plants, paper products, etc). The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) reports that an average of 8,900 home fires are caused by grilling each year.
  3. Check your grills propane hose for leaks and/or cracks and never store propane indoors.

Outdoor Fires
  1. Always use a designated fire pit.
  2. Never leave a fire unattended; especially with children.
  3. Always have an extinguisher nearby and set it next to the pit before you even begin building the fire (shovel, fire extinguisher, bucket of water)
  4. Be mindful of any burn ban that may be in place. Check with your local fire department.
Dryers
  1. Always clean the lint basket before starting the dryer.
  2. The vent pipe of the dryer should be cleaned out once a year, so add that to your spring-cleaning list!

Smoke Alarms
  1. Change batteries in devices once a year.
  2. Test devices every month.
  3. Replace devices after 10 years.
  4. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), a functioning smoke alarm in your home cuts your risk of dying in a house fire by 50 percent. Consider 24/7 monitoring of a fire alarm system by contacting Mahoney Alarms at (518) 793-7788 for additional information.

Escape Plan
  1. Make sure every person in the house has an accessible escape plan; especially children, elders and individuals with disabilities.
  2. Do a couple practice runs.
  3. Draw a floor plan with two ways out of each room.
